According to the Cosmetic Practise Standards Authority (CPSA) which you can view below, the following guidelines should be followed:

Level 4 Students

Professional Use

0.3mm – 0.5 mm

Level 5 Students

Clinical use

Depth between 0.5mm to 0.1 mm on the face

Level 6 Students

1.5mm micro needling for non facial areas

and a depth between 1.5mm – 2.0mm on the body.

Depth can be adjusted according to the thickness of the skin and any skin conditions.

Needle Depths

Acne scarring - 1.0mm - 1.5mm (if using 1.5mm on the face check with your insurance company)

Thin skin - 0.3mm - 1.0mm

Medical only

2.0mm – 3.0mm - Surgical scars, stretch marks and deep wrinkles can be treated by medics only

Micro-needling Needle Sizes - Based on Goal

Depth For Collagen Production - In what is widely known as collagen induction therapy, a derma roller or microneedling device with a diameter of 0.5mm or greater is used to stimulate the formation of collagen and elastin. A skin needling device with a 0.5mm needle length should be considered the product of choice if delaying the ageing process is your primary objective.

Depth For Acne Scars - When using microneedling to treat acne scars, the optimal needle depth ranges from 0.5mm to 1.5mm, with 1mm needles being the most common. although 0.5 or 1.0 mm is recommended. Devices with a needle diameter of 1.5 millimetres can be used to treat clinical conditions or deep scarring on the cheeks. If you plan to use 1.5 millimetres on the face, check with your insurance provider.

Depth For Stretch Marks - Microneedling stretchmarks should be performed at a depth of between 1.5 and 2.5 mm. Before considering increasing to a larger size, it is best to begin with a 1.5mm depth for the first three to four sessions. In order to get a sense of results from from the deep, dark stretch marks, it typically takes between three and five sessions with a needle depth of two millimetres or more. However, the maximum depth that should be used on the body at level 6 is 1.5mm, As stated guidance by the Cosmetics Practise Standards Authority; thus, verify with your insurance company if you intend to go deeper than 1.5mm.

Depth For Scalp Hair Growth – According to research, a microneedling treatment of the scalp with needles measuring 0.5mm or larger will result in an increase in both overall growth and thickness. 0.5mm or 1mm works the best for promoting hair growth.

Depth For Beard Growth - The use of microneedling for the treatment of hair growth on the scalp and the beard should follow the same protocol as the depth for scalp hair growth. It is recommended that you use 0.5mm-1mm for the best results.

Depth for General Scars - Large needle sizes, at least 1.5 mm in diameter, work most effectively to repair scar tissue. The scar's location on the body also influences the correct needle depth.

Depth for Under the Eyes - The most suitable choice for increasing the absorption of serum under the eyes is 0.25mm. In terms of overall anti-aging and the reduction of fine wrinkles, 0.5mm is the most suitable choice.

Depth For Large Pores - With a 0.25mm derma roller or microneedling device, enlarged pores, a common skin concern, can be diminished. The nano-sized needle depth permits up to three treatments per week, which is crucial for a skin treatment that requires consistent maintenance.

Depth For Cellulite - The treatment of cellulite with microneedling is notoriously challenging and is frequently advised against. There is a possibility that you will see benefits with a needle depth of 1.5 mm to 3mm, but this will only be the case for "Grade 1" cellulite. As stated guidance by the Cosmetics Practise Standards Authority; thus, verify with your insurance company if you intend to go deeper than 1.5mm.

Depth For Hyperpigmentation - The most effective treatment for hyperpigmentation uses microneedle diameters ranging from 0.5mm to 1mm. Pigmentation problems are typically located close to the skin's surface, and as a result, the majority of people do not require a substantial needle depth for treatment.

Depth For Neck - You should select a microneedling device with a size that ranges from 0.5mm up to a maximum of 1mm if you want to improve the appearance of the neck. Because there is less downtime between treatments with the 0.5mm, it is often the option of choice for treating skin problems on the neck area. A 1mm derma roller can be used for deep sagging skin. Both sizes are suitable for use for the production of collagen.

Depth For Wrinkles - A derma roller or microneedling device with a 0.3mm diameter can help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the surface layer of the skin. You should go with a 0.5mm device for lines that are deeper and more established, or if you want to create more collagen.
